The MINI DRACO, chambered in 7.62x39mm, is an exceptional pistol designed for specific purposes. It is best suited for static, residential personal defense engagements at short distances. With a length of approximately 18″, it offers moderate compactness compared to other pistols chambered in larger calibers commonly referred to as “rifle” calibers. It accepts all magazines compatible with AK-47 rifles.

This particular pistol comes equipped with a Midwest Industries rail, specifically designed for the MINI DRACO. The rail features circular divots that may serve as heat-transfer points or simply for decorative purposes. It also includes four rails positioned on each plane of the assembly. Installation is moderately easy, and the rail assembly proves superior to the original wooden fore-grip that comes with the weapon.

The optic mounted on top of the rail is a Bushnell Red-Dot. While other manufacturers offer high-end red-dot optics, the Bushnell has proven to be rugged and reliable, boasting an extensive battery life with eleven dim settings. With an approximate 6-MOA hold (1.5″ at 25 yards), it provides satisfactory precision for close-quarter defense purposes at near to mid-range distances, such as 75 yards.

The Laser/Light combo featured is an Insight Technology AN-PEQ 6, offering multiple settings including Visible Light, Visible Laser, Visible Light-Laser Combo, Infrared Light, Infrared Laser, and Infrared Laser-Light Combo. It emits approximately 120 lumens. While some may have reservations about using lasers on weapon systems, they can assist in improving accuracy when employed with proper technique and in conjunction with a sling.

The internals of the MINI DRACO are similar to an AK-47, with the addition of a composite block behind the bolt group assembly. The shorter gas rod of the MINI DRACO eliminates the need for the same recoil distance as an AK-47. If the gas rod were to recoil the full distance, it would float inside the receiver, leading to a catastrophic failure. This can be overcome by using a spring buffer on the recoil spring, which absorbs recoil.
