The new SX4 20 gauge was tested during a December waterfowl hunt at Tennessee’s Reelfoot lake. I noticed that its balance point is slightly further forward than the SX3. This makes it slightly heavier but not unwieldy. The new, trim pistol grip is much more comfortable than the SX3’s. I was able to use the large controls with gloves. Browning’s 3-inch 20 gauge waterfowl loads were my target during that hunt. I used an ounce No. 2 steel shot from muzzle at 1300fps – not exactly a magnum goose load, but enough shell to keep you going when shooting fast and furious. The 20-gauge Waterfowl model that I tested produced very little recoil which allowed me to take faster follow-up shots. The SX4 20 gauge was my hunting weapon. I spent January and February following that hunt chasing cottontails in Ohio.

The Winchester was able to cycle 7/8-ounce loads without any problems. The gun’s exterior also held up well to the abuse it took while being dragged through the briars looking for rabbits. While I would have preferred a 26-inch barrel when following beagles through heavy brush, the SX4 20 gauge Waterfowl, weighing 6 pounds and 12 ounces, was easy to transport all day. The SX4’s point-of-impact was approximately 50/50, which is perfect for a field gun.

There are more than 10 20 gauge SX4 models currently available. They have barrel lengths ranging from 24 to 28 inches, including Field models with walnut stocks, Waterfowl models with Mossy Oak or Realtree camo, and Universal Hunter models with different camo finishes. A variety of models are available in Compact versions that have a 13-inch LOP. The suggested list price is $939.99. This is a great value considering the quality of the SX4.

Winchester’s SX4 s, which are gas-operated semiautos that run on natural gas, are among the most popular. The 20-gauge version of the SX4 s is a welcome addition. It is durable, has many sensible features, produces low recoil, and is affordable. This gun is a great choice if you are looking for a 20 gauge gas gun that can be used for anything, including clay target shooting, upland hunting, and waterfowling.
